I don't have specifics about this years festival (other than the planned dates), but will pass them on as they become available. In the meanwhile, I suggest you check out:

ACF 253: Free Screening of Lee Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine" in New York

I've been singing the praises of Korean director Lee Chang-dong since I saw Oasis, his third film, several years ago. His fourth and most recent film Secret Sunshine (Miryang) came out in 2007 and I saw it at a press screening in conjunction with that fall's New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center. I later reviewed it in my May 6, 2008 post (see ACF 109 in the May 2008 Archives).

The film is about Lee Shin-ae (actress Jeon Do-yeon) who moves with her young son to Miryang, the rural Korean city where her late husband was from. Kim Jong-chan( actor Song Kang-ho) is the owner of a garage who tows their broken-down vehicle into town and falls for Sin-ae. The film seems to be a romantic comedy at first, then a crime thriller, before finally settling into its true raison d'etre, an absolutely amazing consideration of grief and the search for spiritual solace.

Jeon Do-yeon won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, the Asian Film Awards, the Blue Dragon Awards, the South Korea Grand Bell Awards for her role as Shin-ae. Awards most well-deserved, as were the film's other nominations and wins.

In my opinion, Secret Sunshine, like Oasis, will hold its own in comparisons with the best works of the greatest international driectors: Ozu, Kurosawa, Fellini, Antonioni, Truffaut, etc. It is absolutely not to be missed by anyone who cares about great cinema.

The film will be shown free at the ImaginAsian Theatre, 239 East 59th Street, New York, NY. The screening is presented by Korean Cultural Service NY as part of its ChungMuRo Express: Classic Korean Cinema series. The Latest Journey from Visionary Director of Ghost in the Shell

THE SKY CRAWLERS

On Blu-ray™ High-Def and DVD May 26th

I've known about this upcoming release for some time now, but had to hold off sharing the news until Sony made its official announcement, which it did today.

In my review of the film
I wrote that "The aerial scenes and dogfights in this film are terrrific, all the more amazing because they're animated" and that the film is "another visually stunning animation" from director Mamoru Oshii. That review was posted 12.26.08. To access it, click here.

Here's the pre-release info from Sony:

Culver City, CA (March 16, 2009) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The Sky Crawlers on Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD May 26, 2009. From Mamoru Oshii, the world-acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell, comes an award-winning story of an exciting but endless war with heroes too young to understand the meaning of their battles. This visually stunning anime adventure brings to life the nail-biting dogfights from the epic air battles described in Hiroshi Mori’s best-selling novel in Japan. Special features include featurettes on animation and sound design, and the research behind bringing real sights and sounds to life in anime. Exclusively available on the Blu-ray™ High-Def version is an insightful interview with director Oshii.

A group of eternally young fighter pilots known as Kildren experience the sudden loss of innocence as they battle the enemy in astonishing dogfights above the clouds. With his only childhood memory consisting of intense flight training, the fearless teenage pilot Yuichi’s dogfights coexist with his struggle to find his missing past. When his beautiful, young female commander Suito is reluctant to discuss the fate of the pilot that Yuichi is replacing – or the strangely perfect condition of that pilot’s former aircraft – Yuichi’s curiosity becomes heightened.

ACF 249: The Love of Siam @ SFIAAFF

The Love of Siam / Rak haeng Siam
Directed By: Chookiat Sakveerakul
Thailand, 2007, 158 min.

This is one of the many films being shown at the 27th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival that runs March 12-22, 2009. It will screen tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th, 2009 at 2:15 PM at the Castro Theatre and on Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Camera Cinemas 10. Here's a description of it that's from The Love of Siam's webpage, where you can also order tickets.

A groundbreaking teen love story, THE LOVE OF SIAM is a moving gay romance that took Thailand by storm. Mew and Tong are childhood neighbors and become good friends after Tong protects Mew from bullies. Tragedy strikes when Tong's sister disappears, however, and soon Tong's grief-stricken family moves away. Years later, the two boys are reunited in Siam Square, a trendy teenage hangout in Bangkok, where Mew often performs with a now-popular boy band. Rekindling their affections after all these years, the two must decide if their feelings for one another are as friends, or something more. When they discover that Mew's manager looks exactly like Tong's long-lost sister, a different kind of decision is made, one that may create other problems, or a novel solution to Tong's father's grief.

Dealing with both the complexities of family life and teen love, THE LOVE OF SIAM pushes cultural boundaries further by dealing with sexuality in an honest manner rarely seen in Thai commercial film. Despite its controversial subject matter, it managed to win over both audiences and critics at home, winning all major awards and achieving huge box-office success. It also ignited websites, message boards and a slew of online fan fiction that continued the story of Tong and Mew. Chosen to represent Thailand at the 2009 Academy Awards, THE LOVE OF SIAM is a well-crafted, affecting drama that captures the vibrancy of Thai pop culture and its modern capitol.

ACF 247: Tokyo Sonata opens this Friday

Copyright Regent Releasing

Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Japan/Hong Kong/The Netherlands, 2008, 119 mins
In Japanese with English subtitles

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a special preview at Japan Society of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's latest film, which is set to open theatrically in the U.S. this Friday, March 13th, 2009. The auditorium, which has nicely raked and very comfortable seating, was at near capacity, and many in the audience broke into vigorous, heartfelt, and well-deserved, applause at film's end.

Unlike the tales of horror and the supernatural that director Kurosawa is most well known for (such as Cure from 1997 and 2001's Pulse/Kairo), Tokyo Sonatata is a family drama, that coincidentally has great resonance in the harsh realities of America's current economic doldrums.

The Sasaki family is headed by Ryuhei, an administrative salaryman who is downsized out of his job and who hides this development from his wife and two sons. Instead he searches for a new job, only to find out that the only ones available are far below his former postition, and hanging out with other unemployed former bread-winners.

Teruyuki Kagawa, who was recently seen as the sheriff in Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django and in Yasuo Furuhata's The Haunted Samurai/Tsukigami, both from 2007, is perfectly cast as this Japanese everyman who can't quite come to grips with his new lot in life. Largely as a result of his response to the stress of this development, the entire family structure is sent spinning out of control.

His wife Megumi is beautifully portrayed by Kyoko Koizumi. Since 1983 she's been in 35 films according to IMDb, but I didn't recognize any of those listed there. Her finely nuanced performance here is a marvel to behold. She won both the 2008 Hochi Film Award and the 2009 Kinema Junpo Film Award for best actress for her work in Tokyo Sonata and in Gou-Gou datte neko de aru.

Yu Koyanagi has a relatively small role as Takashi, the older brother. A slacker who is described by his father as "a mess," Takashi leaves the family to join the U.S. military to serve in the Middle East.

The pivotal role of Kenji, the younger brother, is superbly handled by Inowaki Kai. An independent spirit, Kenji starts taking piano lessons from a lovely young female teacher. This is where the musical connection with the film's title is made. Kai won the 2009 Kinema Junpo Award for Best New Actor in this, his first film!

The film runs a broad gamut of emotions, from darkly humorous to achingly poignant. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just conclude my comments by saying that I thought the film ended perfectly. At a certain point when the film was clearly going to end before long, I had an incredibly strong feeling that it should conclude in a certain way. The actual ending was very close to what I'd envisioned, only it was actually a bit better. Kurosawa's vision, not surprisingly, was superior to my own.

I give the film an ACF rating of 4 out of 4 stars - outstanding, not-to-be-missed.

Tokyo Sonata won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of last year's Cannes Film Festival.

In New York the film will open at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, Broadway between West 62nd and 63rd Streets (212.757.2280) and at the IFC Center, 323 Sixth Avenue, at West Third Street (212.924.7771).

In San Francisco, Tokyo Sonata will be showing at the 27th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (scroll down this link page, then click on the Tokyo Sonata link there for the pop-up window) on Friday, March 13th, 2009 at 6:45 PM at the Sundance Kabuki 3 and on Saturday, March 14th at 6:00 PM at Pacific Film Archive

There's lots of info to be had at the Tokyo Sonata website, including a full Release Schedule.

ACF 244: Oishinbo A la Carte - Japanese cuisine manga from VIZ

Oishinbo A la Carte © Tetsu Kariya, Akira Hanasaki/Shogakukan Inc.

Oishinbo A la Carte
Story by Tetsu Kariya
Art by Akira Hanasaki
B&W, 260+ pages, rated "T" for teens
SRP $12.99 U.S./$15.00 CDN

It may not be absolutely true, but it certainly seems as if the Japanese have a manga for just about any subject you can name. Oshinbo (which translates as "The Gourmet") explores the surprisingly complex world of Japanese cooking and has sold over 100 million copies since the first volume appeared in 1983.

This fascinating and informative series now runs to over 100 volumes! VIZ media, under the VIZ Signature imprint, has compiled selected highlights into seven a la carte editions for English readers. This is the first one, and it's currently available..

Yamaoka Shiro, a journalist for the Tozai news, has been placed in charge of the paper's Ultimate Menu project. Dramatic conflict is present in the form of Shiro's father, a prominent artist and epicure. He founded and is director of The Gourmet Club. Father and son have an unpleasant history, and they miss no opportunity to deride and belittle one another. This provides the through-story for the characters' - and the reader's - journey through the world of fine Japanese cuisine.

The illustrations are first rate, and a diverse layout is employed, which keeps the pages visually interesting. I'm no authority on manga styles, but for me Hanasaki's drawings remind me a bit of master Ozamu Tezuka's work. And I mean that as a high compliment, not in any way a slight.

The book is laid out in traditional Japanese style, meaning it is read from right to left. This English version thoughtfully includes two pages at the front that identify the twelve main characters and a brief story summary. There's also a fourteen page glossary at the end.

I loved reading this manga and highly recommend it. I can't wait for the next volume, which is concerned with drink and is scheduled to come out this month.

ACF 242: 27th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival

Being New York based, many of my posts are about festivals and particular screenings here in "The Big Apple." However, I'm always glad to learn of and spread the word about such goings-on elsewhere.

So I was pleased to learn about the upcoming 27th San Francisco Asian American Film Festival. Sponsored by The Center for Asian American Media, it will run March 12-22, 2009.

[Note: I learned about this year's SFIAAFF at Wise Kwai's Thai Film Journal, a very worthy blog.]
