20 ONCE AGAIN opens today

CJ E&M America
Presents
 20 Once Again
Directed by Leste Chen
China, 2015, 125 minutes

Romantic comedy stars K-pop chart topper Luhan in his first big screen
debut alongside Huabiao Award winning actress Yang Zi Shan

20 Once Again is a delightful romantic comedy about a grandmother who miraculously regains her youth and has the opportunity she originally missed to become a famous singer, as well as to find true love. The film makes its U.S. and Canada debut in major market cinemas today, Friday, January 16, 2015. Check your local listings or visit www.cj-entertainment.co.

Shen Mengjun, center) with her grandson, son, daughter-in-law and grnaddaught

Shen Mengjun (Grace Guei) is a seventy-year-old grandmother who was widowed when her only child, Guobin, was just over a year old. She lives with him, his wife Yangqin, and their two children, daughter Xiang Xinran and son Qianjin (Luhan, former member of the K-pop group EXO), who's a guitarist.

Shen is partial to the men in her life: her son, her grandson, and Uncle Li Dahai, who worked for her family when he was a teenager and who has always loved her. The women in Shen's life, on the other hand, suffer from the harridan aspect of her personality. One victim is Chen Yumei, one of the women with whom Shen plays mahjong. Closer to home, Shen berates her granddaughter for what she eats and how she dresses. But her most vituperative comments are for her daughter-in-law, whom Shen seems to feel can do nothing right.

When the stress puts Yangqin in the hospital, Shen's son (who happens to be a college professor who specializes in social issues of the elderly!) reluctantly decides to put his mother in a nursing home so his wife can recuperate. Overhearing these plans, Shen goes for a walk. She comes across a store that she'd somehow never noticed before, the Photography Studio of Youth, and has her funeral picture taken so her family will have something to remember her by.

The rejuvenated Shen, now calling herself Meng Lijun (Yang Zi Shan)

When she leaves, however, Shen (now played by Yang Zi Shan) has become the twenty-year-old she once was. She adopts the name Meng Lijun. Antics ensue as do romantic rivalries. She becomes the singer for her grandson's band, and he -- having no idea who she really is -- begins to fall for her. So does Mr. Tan, a talent scout. And, of course, Uncle Li, once he realizes who she is, has his feelings stirred.

20 Once Again is pretty much a Chinese language remake of the South Korean film Miss Granny (2013), which was also presented by CJ Entertainment. In fact, after Shen has regained her youth, she comes to a bus stop and there's an image of actress SHIM Eun-Kyung from Miss Granny behind the bench Shen is sitting on! (Read my January 2014 review of Miss Granny here.)

Shen's grandson Qianjin (Luhan)

But don't let the word "remake" dissuade you. 20 Once Again is a terrific comedy in its own right. All the acting is wonderful, especially Grace Guei and Yang Zi Shan. It also has some nice touches of its own. For example, there's one shot of Meng and the three male members of the band walking across a street that's an obvious wink at the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album cover.

And so, like Miss Granny, I'm giving 20 Once Again a 3.5 out of 4 star rating; very highly recommended.

20 ONCE AGAIN opens in North America this Friday, January 16th

Romantic comedy stars K-pop chart topper Luhan in his first big screen
debut alongside Huabiao Award winning actress Yang Zi Shan

20 Once Again, an introspective portrayal of one woman’s desire to recreate her life and to achieve her dreams of becoming a famous singer, will make its U.S. and Canada debut in major market cinemas this Friday, January 16, 2015.

A romantic comedy, “20 Once Again” captures Shen Meng Jun, an older woman, reminiscing about her life with a local photographer as he is taking her funeral photo. Unknowingly, the photography studio that she is in becomes a time warping room that magically transforms Meng Jun into a beautiful and lively young woman. Fascinated with her new found youth, 20 year old Jun takes every chance she gets to live out her dream of becoming famous singer and finding true love.

The film, a creative take on a classic genre, stars Luhan (former member of the K-pop group EXO) as Xiang Qian Jin and Huabiao award-winning actress Yang Zi Shan (So Young) as 20 year old Meng Jun.

20 Once Again embodies the innovative ideas and work of the Chinese Film Industry with its eloquent delivery of love, faith and humor. Starring some of the top actors and musicians in the entertainment industry this movie adds to Leste Chen’s well-known acclaim for producing excellent romantic stories. As a successful young Director, Leste Chen’s passion for film is shown throughout the movie as he contrasts the many phases of human life and persuades viewers to believe in the power of their dreams despite the circumstance.

20 Once Again is presented, produced and distributed by CJ Entertainment. The film will premiere in major market theaters across the country. Check your local listings or visit www.cj-entertainment.com for more details.

China Lion Film Distribution has acquired the ensemble romantic comedy Women Who Flirt and set a Thanksgiving release date, with most U.S. and Canadian locations to debut the movie on Wednesday, November 26th, 2014. China Lion Australia/New Zealand will release the film the following day, Thursday, November 27th. When Marco announces he’s seeing someone, it sends Angie on a mission to save him from his new and manipulative girlfriend Hailey (Tang Sui). WEDDING PALACE hosting a "Lovers & Friends Viewing Party" Contest

Wedding Palace has K-Pop and Korean Drama Fans Buzzing Online

Award-winning US rom-com film Wedding Palace
kicks-off global VOD and online release with
“Lovers & Friends Viewing Party Contest”
in time for Valentine’s Day

On the heels of its US theatrical run, WEDDING PALACE has been released by Gravitas Ventures throughout North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Japan. To celebrate WEDDING PALACE is hosting a social media event to promote fun, Korean food, and romance for Valentine’s Day and beyond.

Winner of Best Independent Film, Best Cinematography and over $100,000 in prizes at the Cinegear Film Series International Competition, the film stars Hye-Jung Kang ("Oldboy"), wife of K-pop star Tablo in her first English language film. Top critics agree the ensemble cast, led by Brian Tee (“The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”), Bobby Lee (“Mad TV”) and Margaret Cho are "endearingly over the top" (Village Voice); The New York Times hails the film's leads saying "Tee and Kang sparkle together" and compares the "highly stylized" "swimming in color" rom-com to Baz Lurhman's career-launching ballroom dancing delight "Strictly Ballroom."

The comedy explores both the charms and pitfalls of modern, Skype assisted courtship. Separated by the Pacific Ocean, Los Angeleno “Jason” (Tee) and his Korean sweetheart “Na Young” (Kang) develop their romance online and even get engaged over an elegant candle-lit dinner through their computers. Once they meet in person, the bride reveals an outrageous secret she never shared via webcam. Looking for love online is increasingly common. According to statisticbrain.com, 76% of single Americans (40 million people) have tried online dating. A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimates that almost 35% of married couples now meet online.

The indie film has a global Facebook audience approaching 100,000 fans with over 500 Twitter followers joining the social media conversation each day. Director Christine Yoo says, “I can’t believe it. I’m spending my whole day answering people on Twitter. People are finding us from everywhere.”

Gravitas Ventures secured all digital rights to WEDDING PALACE last fall. According to Mia Bruno, Senior Acquisitions Manager, “It has all the ingredients that make for a success on our platform-- it’s a romantic comedy that’s both genuinely romantic and laugh-out-loud funny."

WEDDING PALACE is inviting lovers and friends to come together to watch the film and enter for a chance to win A Korean Kitchen cookbook by Hawaiian food celebrity Joan Namkoong, $250 iTunes gift card, and other fun Korean-themed prizes. Complete contest rules and entry form are posted on the rom-com's official website.

ACF 1564: FINDING MR DESTINY is now available on DVD

Finding Mr. Destiny / Kim-jong-wook-chat-gi
Directed by CHANG You-jeong
Starring: LIM Soo-jung and GONG Yoo
South Korea, 2010, 112 minutes

This delightful Korean rom-com recently became available on DVD from CJ Entertainment and 5 Point Pictures. And while the film marks the cinematic directorial debut of CHANG, she is no newcomer to the material. It's a film adaptation of her hit 2006 musical entitled Finding Kim Jong-wook which had over 1,000 performances.

Ji-woo (LIM Soo-jung of A Tale of Two Sisters and I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK) is single, in her thirties, and the stage director of a new musical called "The Last Show." She's also romantically stuck, unable (or unwilling) to get past the memory of her first love, whom she met on a trip to India ten years earlier.

Ji-woo in India

Gi-joon (GONG Yoo from the film She's on Duty and The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince TV series) is also single and in his thirties; he works for a travel agency. At least he did until he was fired for spending more time telling prospective customers of the perils of travel (such as tsunamis) than about its joys. He then decides to open the First Love Agency, a one-man operation dedicated to helping clients find their long-lost first loves.

When Ji-woo rejects the marriage proposal of a young airline pilot, her father secures Gi-joon's services to find the mysterious man from the India trip so that her daughter will either find her "Mr. Destiny" in him or realize that it's time to move on.

Using her talents and experience from the live stage, CHANG has quite successfully crafted a most enjoyable tale in a medium that's new to her. Both leads are terrific in their respective roles. LIM, who previously played dark, depressed characters, is wonderful as a bright, bubbly young woman; her comically expressive face is a joy to behold. GONG, in his first film since completing his military duties (making it his first in five years) shows that he has not lost his acting chops. His performance as a very straight-laced, earnest young man who gradually loosens up under Ji-woo's spell demonstrates beautifully nuanced evolution.

Ji-woo and Gi-joon check out a Kim Jong-wook who might be Ji-woo's first love

The single disc DVD has terrific bonus features. The roughly 30-minute making of featurette is far better than most. While there are a few of those "this was the greatest experience I've ever had" type of comments, they sound pretty sincere and heartfelt. More importantly, this extra has a lot to say about the film's roots as a stage play, which made me appreciate the film even more. And when's the last time you could say that about a film's DVD extras? There's also a music video of star GONG Yoo recording the song "A Second First Love," a Q&A with director CHANG, a filming on location in India Q&A (Finding Mr. Destiny was the first Korean film with on-location shooting done in India), and more.

Bottom line: Finding Mr. Destiny is a charming romp about the vicissitudes of romance with fine performances by its two leads and supporting cast. It's also most auspicious directorial debut for director CHANG.

ACF rating: 3 out of 4 stars (solidly recommended) for the film, and a separate 3.5 out of 4 (very good) for the DVD extras.

ACF 1401: MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT reviewed; free screening tonight in New York

Korean Cultural Service

Korean Movie Night
Series 2: It's A Fine Romance!
 My Girlfriend Is An Agent
Directed by SIN Tae-ra
South Korea, 2009, 112 minutes
When: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 @ 7:00 PM
Doors open: 6:30 PM
Where: Tribeca Cinemas (map here)
54 Varick Street, on the corner of Canal Street, NYC
Near the A, C, E @ #1 Canal Street subway stops
Admission: FREE!!!
All seating is first-come, first served

The Korean Cultural Service's series of three rom-coms continues tonight with a free screening of MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT, a Korean variation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It starts off with AHN Soo-ji (actress KIM Ha-neul) in a white wedding gown posing for photographs with her groom. Except she's actually working undercover on a stake-out for the Industrial Security Team of NIS (National Intelligence Service).

Soo-ji in action

A high speed chase on water ensues in which -- surprise -- she executes an amazing move and captures the bad guys. In the midst of all this, she gets a phone call from her boyfriend LEE Jae-joon (KANG Ji-hwan). He tells her that he's breaking up with her and leaving the country. She runs to stop him at the airport, but is grabbed by security forces there because of the gun strapped to one of her thighs.

Following this, the film's credits start to roll, accompanied by some Mission Impossible theme-like music. Indeed, a connection with that series will play out much later in the movie. The story resumes three years later. Soo-ji's working cover is now as a travel agent, and she's starting to date Sung-joon, a handsome fellow who seems like a good prospect. Meanwhile, Jae-joon has returned to South Korea and is working with the overseas operations section of the NIS Harimao ("fearless tiger") Team. In a typical instance of inter-agency rivalry and secrecy, neither of these divisions know what the other is up to. And it turns out that they're both working on the same case, but coming at it from different directions.

Jae-joon on the floor and in trouble

Naturally Soo-ji and Jae-joon encounter one another and their mutual feelings are rekindled. But the situation is complicated, to say the least, as neither can reveal what they really do. Lies, suspicion and distrust ensue, the same factors that led him to leave her three years earlier.

Will they be able to surmount these difficulties and finally find true love with one another? Will they be able to thwart the sale of a biochemical weapon by Dr. Roh (Soo-ji's target) to Victor, a Russian agent being trailed by Jae-joon?

Soo-ji and Jae-joon prepare to "foil" the bad guy

This being a rom-com, the results are not all that unpredictable. But it's how the film gets there that matters, and MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT does so in fine form. Both leads are well-suited for their roles, and there's a nice contrast between Soo-ji's significant experience and Jae-joon's hilarious ineptitude as he tries to break into field work from the research end of operations. The movie also does a nice job of using seemingly insignificant things to set-up important developments later on.

MY GIRLFRIEND IS AN AGENT is a delightful romp in the realm of rom-com espionage. ACF Rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars, highly recommended.

ACF 1379: CYRANO AGENCY reviewed; free screening in NY tomorrow, Tuesday, March 13th

Korean Cultural Service
presents
Korean Movie Night
Series 2: It's A Fine Romance!
Cyrano Agency / Si-ra-no;Yeon-ae-jo-jak-do
Directed by KIM Hyeon-seok
South Korea, 2010, 117 minutes
When: Tuesday, March 13, 2012 @ 7:00 PM
Doors open: 6:30 PM
Where: Tribeca Cinemas (map here)
54 Varick Street, on the corner of Canal Street, NYC
Near the A, C, E @ #1 Canal Street subway stops
Admission: FREE!!!
All seating is first-come, first served

Named after the character with the big nose who writes love letters for another man, the Cyrano Agency consists of four would-be thespians, three men and one woman. They assist young men, who lack the social skills to do it themselves, to win the hearts of the women they want to be with. Using high tech surveillance equipment and a decked out reddish van, they learn all about the object of their client's desire and fashion the perfect script for their client's love life. The firm's motto: "We Make Your Love Real. Confidentially."

Min-yeong, left, and Byeong-hoon

Byeong-hoon (UHM Tai-woong) is the boss of the agency; Min-yeong (PARK Shin-hye), the lone female employee. Along with the two other male co-workers (who do not feature all that much in the film), they started the agency to make money in the hopes of setting up a real theater. In fact, their "office" is situated in an old theater building.

The film essentially consists of two sections. In the first, and shorter, section, a new client, KIM Hyun-gon, seeks their services so he can connect with a 24 year old woman who works at a coffee shop. The agency's research  reveals that she takes yoga class after work, studied fashion, and is into music. An actress is employed to go "undercover" as a worker at the coffee shop, feign interest in Hyun-gon and make Suh-ah jealous. Their meticulous work, crafty methods, and uncanny knowledge of what it takes to "hook" any particular woman serve their client well. Chalk up one more win for cupid's assistants!

Sang-yong and Hee-joong

The success rate of the agency seems about to falter in the second section of the film. Sang-yong (Daniel CHOI) is a handsome, successful fund manager. He pines for Hee-joong (LEE Min-jung), whom he has observed from afar at the church they both attend.

Something clearly is amiss from the get-go, as Byeong-hoon clearly doesn't want to take on Sang-yong as a client. First Byeong-hoon sets an outrageously high price for the agency's services. Then, instead of following a sensible path, he arranges for Sang-yong to insult the church's pastor, who just happens to be related to Hee-joong. Why does Byeong-hoon want to sabotage a lucrative assignment that the financially strapped agency desperately needs? Well, it seems that he and Hee-joong were an item in the past, and Byeong-hoon still has powerful feelings for her.

There is plenty of drama and comedy as this weird situation plays out, keeping the audience in suspense as to who, if anyone, will wind up with whom at film's end. Cyrano Agency is a delightful rom-com with a smart premise and four leads who are both talented and good-looking. ACF Rating: 3 out of 4 stars; solidly recommended.

ACF 043: Unstoppable Marriage

Unstoppable Marriage
Korea 2007
International Premiere
New York Korean Film Festival 2007

The concept that "opposites attract" has served romantic comedy films well since at least, oh, off the top of my head, Howard Hawk's 1938 classic Bringing Up Baby. So it's nice to see it used in such a delightful and fresh way as it is here. First time director Kim Sung-wook, who also wrote the screenplay, has come "out of the gate" with a hilarious comedy of manners - or lack thereof on the part of some characters - that had me laughing a lot, sometimes out loud, as I watched a screener DVD in my living room. Not too shabby, especially when you consider how difficult comedy really is, and even more so with sub-titles!

Hwang Ki-baek is a handsome doctor who specializes in breast implants. He comes from a very wealthy family and is also quite a playboy. One day, a girlfriend tricks him into going para-gliding - he's expecting sex - and he freaks out in mid-flight. Strapped in front of his instructor, he causes the two of them to land in a tree, after which he discovers that: (1) His instructor is a lovely young woman and that (2) In his fear, he'd lost control of his bladder and is now exhibiting a huge wet spot down the front of his pants.

From this inauspicious start, love comes to bloom between Ki-baek and the instructor, Park Eun-ho. She comes from a very modest and traditional background. Although she does para-gliding on the weekends, her real vocation is making dolls out of mulberry paper and teaching classes - albeit small ones - in this Korean folk craft. She also does a martial art that resembles Tai Chi.

Having overcome their initial mutual animosity and cultural differences, the would-be couple then has to deal with the opposition of their single parents. Ki-baek's mother, Shim Mar-uyun, is a real estate wheeler-dealer, who has affectations of culture and sophistication, but who can be as coarse-mouthed as any sailer. Eun ho's father, Park Ji-mahn, is a widower, a former marine, a collector of ink stones, and a practitioner of martial arts and feng shui.

Further complicating matters is the fact that Mrs. Shim is involved with an American partner in developing a luxurious golf course, but has been stymied by one landowner who refuses to sell out. Mr. Park, naturally, is the owner in question. In a development that's sort of a negative parallel to their children overcoming their differences, these two put aside their mutual distaste, only their efforts are to prevent the couple from uniting.

Given the film's title and the fact that it's a romantic comedy, I'm surely not giving anything away in saying that the wedding ultimately takes place. But it's in the getting there wherein the fun lies, and there's lots of fun along the way.

Kim Yoo-jin, also anglicized as Eugene or Eu Gene, is a pop star and TV actress here making her big screen debut. She's obviously lovely and definitely talented. She can play it straight, tough or comic, depending on what a scene calls for.

Ha Seok-jin (also Ha Suk Jin) is fine as Ki-baek. It's a rather thankless roll, as most of the comedy comes from the other three leads.

Lim Chae Moo, recently in Highway Star, acquits himself wonderfully as Eun-ho's father. Gruff at times, tender at others, his best scene may be his confrontation with a fancy ultra-modern Western-style toilet at Mrs. Shim's home.

But if the movie can be said to clearly belong most to one actor, that would have to be Kim Soo-mi as Mrs. Shim. Her performance is masterful. She can instantly change from being utterly pretentious to shockingly crass, yet still humanize her character in her few scenes that call for touching drama. I'm predicting a Korean film award for her, or at least a nomination.

The film also gives some good moments to Mr. Park's younger brother, who engraves seals and is not above extorting money from Ki-baek, and to Ki-Baek's younger sister, a seeming air-head with her mother's acquisitive propensities but not her business smarts. Her reaction to him saying that she is as smart as she is beautiful is priceless. And don't miss them in the coda that plays in a window as the end credits roll.

The clash between traditional values and the potentially corrupting influence of Westernization had been a concern of Koreans and Korean films since at least the 1990s, the decade the 3-8-6 filmmakers emerged. [They were so named because they were in their 30s, had been in college in the 1980s, and had been born in the 60s.] Unstoppable Marriage, which does not totally deplore modernization, clearly comes down most strongly in favor of the traditional. Still, it's nice to see Andrew, Mrs. Shim's partner and the only Westerner in the film, portrayed not as a money-grubbing American, but as a sensitive person who appreciates the value of traditional Korean crafts and sensibilities. This is a far cry, say, from the portrayal of Americans in the recent monster/horror hit The Host.

Unstoppable Marriage (also sometimes called Unpreventable Marriage) had its "International Premiere" - by which I assume is meant its first screening outside of Korea - at the NYKFF 2007 on Friday, August 24th and will have its second and final screening on Wednesday, August 29th at 9:00 PM. The film easily earns a 3.5 out of 4 star ACF rating.
