SNOW GIRL AND THE DARK CRYSTAL reviewed

Well Go USA
presents
Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal / Zhong Kui fu mo: Xue yao mo ling
Co-directed by Peter Pau and Zhao Tianyu
Starring Li Bingbing and Chen Kun
China/Hong Kong, 2015, 118 minutes

Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal is a Chinese action/fantasy romance that recently debuted on Digital HD, Blu-ray™ and DVD from Well Go USA Entertainment. This review is based on watching the Blu-ray version, the transfer of which was stunning.

As the film begins, we are told that there are three categories of beings: gods, humans, and demons. Once every millennium, on July 15th, when the moon is full, all beings can cross realms through reincarnation. The Dark Crystal of the title is said to memorialize the demons' bitter spiritual quest.

The city of Hu is near the demons' realm and its safety depends on getting the crystal out of the hands of the demons. Zhong Kui (Chen Kun of Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon and Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) is tasked by Master Zhang Daoxian (Winston Chao), a god, with stealing the Dark Crystal, which he succeeds in doing.

Zhong Kui in his transformed state

Snow Girl (Li Bingbing of Transformers: Age of Extinction and Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame) is sent to Hu to regain possession of the crystal. She, it turns out, had been known as Little Snow three years earlier when Zhong Kui had fallen in love with her.

So, like other Chinese films such as The Bride with White Hair and its recent remake White Haired Witch, this story involves two star-crossed lovers from different realms. Only here the situation is complicated by certain characters not being what they appear to be. Consequently, uncertainty arises over whether Zhong Kui's feelings for Snow Girl will prove stronger than his duty to save Hu and its citizens, including his sister, from being overrun by demons.

Snow Girl as a performer sent to entrance the citizens of Hu

The film, co-directed by Peter Pau (who won the 2001 Oscar for Best Cinematography for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Zhao Tianyu, makes extensive use of CGI special effects. The results, produced by a Korean company, are mixed. Zhong Kui is capable of transforming himself into a tall, demon-like creature who has what appears to be red hot lava inside of him. The appearance is photo-realistic, but the animation is somewhat staggered, rather like the stop motion of King Kong and Ray Harryhausen's films. Snow Girl, on the other hand, is very stylized in her animation sequences, and barely resembles Li Bingbing at those times.

Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal was originally released in 3D and some of the scenes clearly indicate that they were planned to maximize their impact in that format. While it comes across quite well in 2D, I had a feeling that it's a better watch in 3D. I'm actually hoping that it'll be shown at an upcoming New York Asian Film Festival in that format, as Tsui Hark's The Taking of Tiger Mountain 3D was at the 2015 NYAFF.

Master Zhang, left, and a tronaformed Zhong Kui

As released on disc, Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal is a decent enough watch. Rather enjoyable, actually, though by no means great. Like so many other recent films that are primarily products of Mainland China, the production values are good overall, but the acting is somewhat thin and superficial. Maybe it's just that I got spoiled by watching so many great Hong Kong actors and actresses in films of the 1980s and '90s. But even the newer crop of Hong Kong actors seem to consistently offer more in terms of depth and nuance than their mainland counterparts.

AsianCineFest Rating: 2.5 out of 4 stars; better than fair, but not quite desrving of a "good" rating.

ACF 1592: PAINTED SKIN: THE RESURRECTION is now playing in four cities in North America

Painted Skin: The Resurrection
Directed by  Wuershan (The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman)
Starring: Xun Zhou, Vicki Zhao, Chen Kun, Mimi Yang,
William Feng, Kris Phillips, Chen Tingjia
China, 2012, 131 minutes
International version: in Mandarin with English and
Chinese subtitles (intended for non-Mandarin-speaking Chinese)
Not rated; contains strong, graphic violence. For 15 and up

Painted Skin: The Resurrection is single-monikered director Wuershan's sequel to the 2008 original which was directed by Gordan Chan. It opened this past Friday, August 17th in four cities: New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto. (Sorry, but no info about whether or not the film will be released in more North American cities.) Actress Xun Zhou (Beijing Bicycle, Legend of the Black Scorpion, The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) reprises her role as Xiaowei, a fox demon.

Actress Wei Zhao (Shaolin Soccer, both Red Cliff films) and actor Kun Chen (The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) also return, albeit in new roles. Zhao portrays Princess Jing, one of the emperor's fourteen daughters. Chen is General Huo Xin, who is assigned to the White City near the boarder with the warmongering Tian Lang State. (Note: I have not seen the original film and have deduced that these two are playing different characters based on information in their filmographies.)

Xiaowei breaks free of her icy prison

As the film begins, Xiaowei has been imprisoned and tortured in an icy abyss for 500 years because she had saved a mortal man's life in violation of the laws of the demon world. Quer (Mini Yang), a bird demon who was attracted to her face, pecks at the ice and sets her free. (The name is spelled this way in the DVD screener I watched, but spelled Que'er in some articles.) Since she is a demon, Xiaowei must devour human hearts so that she can maintain her human appearance. Only if a human willingly offers his -- or her -- heart to Xiaowei can she hope to transmogrify completely from a demon to a human.

Xiaowei, left, and Princess Jing

After Jing saves Xiaowei from some marauders, the two become very close. Years earlier part of the right side of Jing's face had been badly mauled by a huge bear, and she now wear a partial face mask to cover her scars. Huo Xin, who had been the princess's guard and with whom she is in love, saved her life. Now she has come to White City to see if, despite her disfigurement and the difference in their statuses, he will return her love.

General Huo Xin

Complicating matters are the Emperor's plan to use Jing to pacify a potential threatening situation with the state of Tian Lag. Meanwhile, an oddball relationship develops between the adorable Quer and an itinerant demon slayer (Shaofeng Feng), a relationship that provides some amusing comic relief.

The Wizard (actor Feng Xiang) of Tian Lang

Overall the look of the film is quite lovely, with high production values. There's a lot of CGI going on here, which one would expect from a fantasy tale, and most of it is very good. However, a couple of scenes that use either green screen or rear projection are somewhat second rate: the foreground figures seem totally disassociated from the background.

Xiaowei, in her not-quite-human form, and Princess Jing, sans facemask

I found many aspects of the film reminding me of other films:
- Pincess Jing's partial facemask brought Phantom of the Opera to mind
- Xiaowei  at times bore a resemblance to Brigitte Lin's character in the Bride with White Hair
- a swarm of arrows could have come from Hero (although here they were all aflame)
- the army of Tian Lang could have been a cousin to the evil forces from The Lord of the Rings trilogy
- when Xiaowei strips off her human skin, the result is like  full-body Face/Off
- scenes of Xiaowei and Jing together in a bath are reminiscent of Joey Wang and Maggie Cheung in Tsui Hark's Green Snake

But don't get me wrong; these associations did not in any way diminish my enjoyment of the film.

Painted Skin: The Resurrection is, on balance, a well-crafted, thoroughly enjoyable fantasy tale.

ACF rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars; highly recommended.

The Light and Dark both seek to claim her, for she is the only mortal who can awaken the legendary Dragon Sword, the fearsome weapon destined to bring an end to the war. Can Saya make the dreadful choice between the Light and Dark, or is she doomed—like all the Water Maidens who came before her…?

Noriko Ogiwara was inspired to write by the classic Western children's books she read as she was growing up. Dragon Sword and Wind Child is her first book, part of the award winning Magatama Trilogy. He wrote HARMONY while in the hospital receiving treatment for the disease.

ROCKET GIRLS by Housuke Nojiri

Price: $13.99 U.S. / CAN $18.99 · Available September 21st

Yukari Morita is a high school girl on a quest to find her missing father. While searching for him in the Solomon Islands, she receives the offer of a lifetime. She'll receive the help she needs to find her father, and all she must do in return is become the world's youngest, lightest astronaut. Yukari and her half sister Matsuri, both petite, are the perfect crew and payload for the Solomon Space Association's rocket launches, or they will be once they complete some rigorous and sometimes dangerous training.

Housuke Nojiri was born in Mie, Japan, in 1961. After working in instrumentation control, CAD programming and video game design, he published his first work in 1992, The Blind Spot of Veis, based on the video game Creguian. He gained further popularity with his subsequent works including the Creguian series and the Rocket Girl series. In 2002, he published USURPER OF THE SUN (published in English by Haikasoru in 2009) and ushered in a new era of science fiction in Japan. After first appearing as a series of short stories, USURPER went on to win the prestigious Seiun Award for Best Japanese Science Fiction Novel of 2002. Nojiri’s other works include Pendulum of Pinieru and Fuwa-Fuwa no Izumi.

SUMMER, FIREWORKS, AND MY CORPSE by Otsuichi

Price: $14.99 U.S. / CAN $19.99 Available September 21st

Two short novels, including the title story and Black Fairy Tale, plus a bonus short story. Summer is the simple story of a nine-year-old girl who dies while on summer vacation. While her youthful killers try to hide her body, she tells us the story--from the point of view of her dead body--of the children's attempt to get away with murder. Black Fairy Tale is classic J-horror: a young girl loses an eye in an accident but receives a transplant. Now she can see again, but what she sees out of her new left eye is the experiences and memories of its previous owner. Its previous deceased owner.

Born 1978 in Fukuoka, Japan, Otsuichi won the Sixth Jump Short Fiction/Nonfiction Prize when he was seventeen with his debut story "Summer, Fireworks, and My Corpse." Now recognized as one of the most talented young fantasy/horror writers in Japan, his other English-language works include the short story collection Calling You and the Honkaku Mystery Prize-winning novel Goth.

Originally published in Japan by Hayakawa Pubishing, Inc.

VIZ Media has announced the launch of a brand-new imprint called Haikasoru, which will publish an array of contemporary Japanese science fiction (SF) and fantasy stories for English-speaking audiences. This is the first time an imprint with a dedicated focus on Japanese SF has launched in North America.

Haikasoru is scheduled to publish twelve books a year and launches in the summer of 2009 with four titles: The Lord of the Sands of Time by Issui Ogawa (pictured above), All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, ZOO by Otsuichi, and Usurper of the Sun by Housuke Nojiri.

Haikasoru will be helmed by Nick Mamatas, a respected author of science fiction as well as an editor at VIZ Media. Mamatas is the author of two novels, which have been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award and Germany's Kurd Lasswitz Prize.

"I'm thrilled to be a part of this new imprint,” says Mamatas. “Haikasoru is making history with the future. Finally, SF is going global."

The Lord of the Sands of Time by Issui Ogawa – Price: $13.99 U.S./CAN $16.00
Sixty-two years after human life on earth was annihilated by rampaging aliens, the enigmatic cyborg Messenger O is sent back in time with the mission to unite the humanity of past eras—during World War II and in ancient Japan, even back at the dawn of humanity—in order to defeat the alien invasion before it begins. But amidst a future shredded by war, love also waits for O. Will O save humanity only to doom himself? The Lord of the Sands of Time was nominated for the prestigious Seiun Award, the leading award for Japanese science fiction, the winners of which are selected each year by members of the Japanese National Science Fiction Convention. Available in July 2009.

ALL YOU NEED IS KILL by Hiroshi Sakurazaka – Price: $13.99 U.S./CAN $16.00
When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he finally sees something different, something out of place—a female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji’s escape or his final death? Available in July 2009.

ZOO by Otsuichi – Price: $13.99 U.S./CAN $16.00
ZOO presents eleven stories of dark fantasy and science fiction by one of Japan’s hottest authors. "The White Hut In The Forest" is the story of a man with a hole in his head and a charming home made from some strange materials. "Song of the Sunny Spot" is a rendition of the classic story of the Earth's last man...and his charming companion. And in the book’s eponymous tale, a man sees his dead girlfriend’s corpse decompose, one gristly Polaroid snapshot at a time. ZOO sold over 740,000 copies in Japan and was also turned into a successful Japanese film. Available in September 2009.

USURPER OF THE SUN by Housuke Nojiri - Price: $15.99 U.S./CAN $18.99
When a ring appears around the sun, humanity seems doomed. One woman, a brave scientist named Aki Shiraishi, travels to the core of the solar system in a last-ditch attempt to save the world. A compelling new hard SF novel, Usurper of the Sun won a coveted Seiun Award in 2002 for Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year. Available in September 2009.

"Japan has long had a love affair with science fiction. In the wake of the massive international popularity of manga and anime, this is an ideal time to offer some of the best in contemporary Japanese science fiction to a sizeable domestic audience," says Masumi Washington, Editor-In-Chief, Haikasoru Imprint, VIZ Media. “VIZ Media has been publishing fiction for a while, and now with the formation of Haikasoru it’s like finding a missing piece in a jigsaw puzzle. We are pleased to introduce this unique imprint and look forward to VIZ Media fans and science fiction readers in general enjoying these books.”
