Tokyo's reputation as a media-saturated hub for global information and cutting-edge innovation makes it the perfect sample for addressing a new outlook on music culture. This documentary takes the viewer through the back streets in Shinjuku, the intersections in Shibuya, the alleys in Koenji, and all over Tokyo, as it highlights the innovative musicians who create this multi-faceted artistic culture. The film features performances by DMBQ, Tenniscoats, Shugo Tokumaru, Nisennenmondai, PARA (ex-Boredoms), Kirihito, d.v.d., and many more.
Film director Lewis Rapkin is a NYC-based filmmaker and musician. He has worked on documentaries for PBS, HBO and is currently editing a TV series for the Discovery Channel. As a musician, he has worked on soundtracks for industrials and short films and has composed the original music for Live From Tokyo. Rapkin has played keyboards, guitar, bass and drums with bands in both New York and Tokyo. Live From Tokyo stems from Rapkin’s interest in the Tokyo music scene and his early documentation of it while studying in Japan in 2005. In 2008, he returned to Japan with a crew to start the production of Live From Tokyo. Rapkin has recently come back from Berlin, where he was scouting and researching the making of a Live From Berlin.
