In a career spanning four decades, Oshima (Cruel Story of Youth, In the Realm of the Senses) has made some of the most memorable as well as formally and politically provocative films highlighting outcasts, criminals and rebellious youth in Japanese film history. In Pleasures, a lovesick young man entrusted with a case of money belonging to an imprisoned bureaucrat embarks on a year of sexual fantasies and indulgence. (Janus Films)

And though I always encourage attendance at public theatrical presentations, I recognize that some people can't make it. For them, I pass on the info that Pleasure of the Flesh is one of the five films on DVD in Oshima's Outlaw Sixties (Eclipse Series 21) from The Criterion Collection. It's the one film in the box set that I've seen so far, and it's a fine transfer of a very good film. But go see it for free at Asia Society if you can!
