ACF 1623: Remembering Japanese writer and director Shohei Imamura
Japanese writer and director Shohei Imamura was born eighty-six years ago, on in
Tokyo, Japan.
Pigs and Battleships (1961)
He died in Tokyo on May 30, 2006, of liver cancer.
The Insect Woman (1963)
His filmmaking career spanned more than four decades.
Intentions of Murder (1964)
Many of the twenty-four films he directed depicted the sensuality and desire that lay beneath the veneer of Japanese society.
The Pornographers (1966)
As is evident from the images above, his works are well represented on Region 1 DVDs, particularly in The Criterion Collection.
A Man Vanishes (1967)
Besides the films illustrated here, other well-known titles Imamura directed include Vengeance is Mine (1979), Black Rain (1989), and The Eel (1997)
