MAY 13 – BOOMERANG FAMILY (2013), American Premiere
Filmmaker In-Mo is going through a crisis. His wife has left him for another man, his first movie is a total flop, and now he can’t pay his rent. While visiting his mother for dinner, he makes the decision to stay at her house indefinitely – a choice that does not sit well with his ex-con brother. Soon, In-Mo discovers that his sister is also planning on moving back home, and the usually calm family spirals into heated arguments. Who deserves to live there most? Will the issues of her troubled children drive their secretive mother to madness? And most importantly, can they ever all live together as a happy family?
MAY 27 – MY NO-MERCY HOME (2013), North American Premiere
In this dark, critically acclaimed documentary, director Choi Mikyung (aka Aori) chronicles the sad tale of Dolphin, a young woman who had been abused and ignored, and wanted to have a positive outlet to tell her troubling tale. Sexually harassed by her father and then rebuked by her family, Dolphin was forced to escape from her home in order to expose the awful truth. Told through dramatic footage, reenactments, and eye-opening interviews, My No-Mercy Home is the troubling but ultimately redemptive story of a woman whose family wasn’t there for her, so she created a new, supportive family of her own.
JUNE 17 – APPROVED FOR ADOPTION (2012)
In one of the most impressive documentaries ever made, filmmaker Jung Henin tells his own memoir through stunning hand-drawn animation. As one of thousands of Korean children adopted by Western families after the end of the Korean War, Approved for Adoption is the poetic and oftentimes humorous story of a boy stranded between cultures, trying to find his place in the world as he grows into a man. Told using Henin’s own animation intercut with snippets of super-8 family footage and archival film, the resulting movie is like no other: an intimate, moving look inside life, love, and family never before captured on-screen.
