The Pirates/Hae-jeok: Ba-da-ro gan san-jeok
Directed by LEE Seok-hoon
South Korea, 2014, 130 minutes
The swashbuckling action-adventure The Pirates sets sail on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital January 20 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Set in 1388, this epic tale of the high seas depicts the efforts of several warring factions as they attempt to retrieve the emperor's royal seal (and the attendant bounty) after it’s literally swallowed by a whale. Joining in the fun under the direction of LEE Seok-hoon (Dancing Queen) are KIM Nam-gil (No Regret), SON Ye-jin (Blood and Ties), YOO Hai-jin (Flu), LEE Kyoung-young (Kundo: Age of the Rampant), KIM Tae-woo (Lady Furious), PARK Chul-min (Spellbound) and Sulli Choi (Fashion King).
Synopsis: On the eve of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, an unprecedented robbery shocks the nation-in-waiting: a whale has swallowed the Emperor's Royal Seal and a bounty placed on its retrieval. Now, every infamous gang of thieves, thugs, pirates and government agents take to the seas, battling the elements, creatures of the deep, and each other to possess the mother of all rewards. THE PIRATES has a runtime of approximately 130 minutes and is not rated.
I saw The Pirates not all that long ago at one of the free Korean Movie Night NY screenings generously provided by the Korean Cultural Service and can attest that it's a roaring good time, a most enjoyable action flick.
