Based on a Punjabi novel, Singh’s debut feature follows a small-town family that gets caught up in a power struggle when a neighbor’s home is demolished.
A cast of nonprofessional actors delivers intensely committed performances, and Singh makes use of evocative formal compositions and meditative stillness to dramatize his characters’ discontent and unfulfilled desires.
The film calls attention to the latent violence that resides in those who see no possibility for a better life. Singh follows the highly stylistic approach to storytelling pioneered by his mentor, Mani Kaul.
